Planning your Goals

Planning how you will achieve your goal is important. Here are some suggestions:

  • Keep a diary about your mood, feelings, tiredness or other problems. Can you see any patterns? E.g. certain times or things that affect you.
  • Plan to action your goals at times when you know your treatments, tests or appointments allow, or at times of the day when you are least tired.
  • Reward yourself for goals met. This may include time for rest after any activity if you have a problem with tiredness.
  • Be realistic – don’t try and do too much.
  • You may need to give up some activities at first. Prepare for this and think about what is most important in your life.
  • You can contact your cancer nurse, cancer doctor, GP or other member of the clinical team who may be able to help.

Things that can get in the way

Sometimes things can get in the way of your plans.

  • You may feel too tired, have run out of time, or something unexpected had ‘cropped up’ that might mean you put off what you had planned to do.

Don’t worry if this happens; think about what got in the way and reschedule for a time that suits you better.

It might be helpful to look back at your goals from time to time to see if they are too easy or too hard.
